From 2005 to 2011 David was a Senior Lecturer at the University of East London School of Architecture and the Visual Arts. He taught primarily on the History and Theory of Architecture programme and represented the university at Edinburgh Colllege of Art and the Royal Geographical Society.

In the manner of the Unit system, students chose a seminar to study for one academic year. David led four such seminars on the theme of the city. Designers, critics and authors were invited to 'crit' essay proposals. Critics included Neil Bennett, Aoife Donnelly, Will Hunter, Alexandra Stara, Alaistair Steele and Finn Williams.

An introduction to historical and theoretical studies in architecture, the UEL programme introduced a way of seeing architecture as something beyond the drawing and beyond the exercise of technology, and as a manifestation of culture and ideology. Students read and discuss, in small seminar groups, some key propositions on architecture, including Ruskin, Alberti, Venturi and Koolhaas.
