UNIT 2 2011-12: 'GREAT ESTATES'
Tutors: Adam Khan and David Knight
The Olympic Legacy Company promises development which channels the spirit of London’s ‘Great Estates’: Bloomsbury, Grosvenor, Portman. But is this the right or only model for the Lea Valley of today and tomorrow?
We will begin the year by examining a far wider set of great estates, from the postwar pre-fabs of the Excalibur Estate to the world’s first council housing to homes from Muthesius’ The English House. We will make drawings which describe how these ‘estates’ were made, who by and who for.
The unit will then go on to design mixed-use buildings for the fringes of the new Olympic neighbourhoods.
