Small terraced buildings containing both a shop and a home are everywhere in London and are perhaps the most typical, ordinary building on the city’s high streets. However, there is a definite stigma about ‘living above a shop’ and it is one of the hardest homes to get a mortgage for in the contemporary property market. Studio 1.4 investigated the role this humble building type might play in the ongoing development of London. Each student will replace one dilapidated terraced building on the Edgware Road with a new one that includes both retail and residential use-classes. Could the incremental change allowed by these buildings yield lessons for contemporary development?
Critics and Guests since 2010: Alejandro Beals, Neil Bennett, Hugh McEwen, Cristina Monteiro, Jake Moulson.
